Long Review

My Experience

A couple of years ago, I wanted to colour my hair and achieve really light tones with the dream being a nice vibrant grey ash. Going from black hair to the opposite end of the spectrum requires a lot of bleach processing, which in turn, means a lot of damage to the hair. During that time, I wanted to ensure that my hair stayed as healthy as possible while fighting against the dryness of the chemical processes as well as the cold and dry winters of Calgary. I had started using the Moroccanoil leave-in conditioner and found it to be exactly what I needed to replenish some of the moisture in my hair. I have even recommended this product to family and friends to help add more conditioning to their hair, as well as a detangling aid. Even if you don't colour your hair, you may find that this could be a great product for you to have, especially if you have more coarse, dry hair.

Currently, this product is priced at around $34 on Sephora, which may seem like a high price point for anyone who doesn't want to invest much into haircare products. So let's unpack whether or not this product is worth that amount for what you're getting.

Positives

Clearly, you can already tell that I think highly of this product and would recommend it to anyone with frizzy and dry hair issues. The best thing about this product is that it simply does the job of hydrating hair and making it feel soft and easy to detangle. The feeling of it in your hair is light and workable, and the product also acts as a heat protectant so if you need to use heat tools, like a curling iron, you can do so without causing much damage. Many of the 5-star reviews for the product (128 Non-incentivized* Reviews/ Ratings) found that the Leave-in Conditioner left the hair noticeably softer, shinier, and smooth through detangling. The reviews noted that the hair did not feel weighed down by the product and that they felt instant results right after applying.

Negatives

Moroccanoil products tend to have a signature scent among the entire product line. Although I enjoy the smell and think it is very wearable, it does tend to cling for a long time and I find myself catching whiffs of it throughout the day. This could be a positive for you if you are into fragrances and want something that will last the day, but I find it can be a negative for those who are sensitive to perfumes and strong smells.

Another issue with the All-in-One Leave-in conditioner that was brought up in the negative reviews (24 one-star reviews & 17 two-star reviews) is that the spray nozzle is designed pretty poorly and will jam. The product is great, but if you aren't able to get it out of the bottle, then it does ruin the experience. I have noticed that the nozzle has been changed recently to address this concern. Whether the updated nozzle (which looks like a classic spray nozzle you'd find on any other product) works better than the previous is still to be determined, but it is good to see that Moroccanoil addresses feedback provided by customers!

The product also claims to provide up to 72 hours of softness, but from my experience with chemically damaged hair, this is not going to be the case and it can only do so much for really, really dry hair. So try not to get your hopes up that this will completely heal your hair, and you may find that you will need to use it more often than every 3 days. Some of the negative reviews even shared that they found little to no benefit from the product and that their hair remained relatively the same before and after use. No product will be effective for everyone, and it is a shame to see that there are a few people who did not find this product helpful. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a specific hair type or determining factor for why the product didn't work, and it could be a number of reasons.

How to Use

For leave-in conditioners, keep in mind that this is a product meant to be added to your regular haircare routine, and not part of a styling routine. What I mean by that is that whatever schedule you have for shampoo and conditioning should dictate when you use the leave-in conditioner. So if you shampoo & condition twice a week, then you can use the leave-in twice a week as well. I would usually add it to my hair right after shampooing and conditioning as I wanted to really add moisture to the hair all at once, especially since I was shampooing coloured hair, which leaves it super dry. You may find that you want to shampoo and condition on one day, and then apply the leave-in a day or two after, as a way to maintain hydration in your hair consistently.

When applying, I would add this to damp hair to lock in moisture. I find that I only need 2-3 sprays to cover my short hair, but those with longer hair may want to do 5-6. Just enough to lightly cover the hair. Then, I like to run my fingers through my hair to make sure the product is saturating all of my hair. Since this is still a conditioning product, focus more on the hair strands and try to avoid massaging into the scalp as you don't want to clog your pores.

I wouldn't use this as part of a styling routine that involved blow drying as I find the hair is too soft to manipulate properly and I would end up with more fly-away hairs. I find I get the best results for hairstyling when I use a dedicated product for it, such as a salt spray, which will add more grip and support to the hair. If you are more of a wash-and-wear kind of person who wears the hair naturally, then you may be able to get away with applying the leave-in conditioner as part of your styling routine, though I think it is not necessary to apply this product daily. Even if you have really dry hair, you don't want to affect the natural balance of your hair and scalp by overloading it with a product every day as that can build up very quickly [1].

Summary

If you suffer from dry hair and need a boost in moisturizing for your hair, then I definitely suggest incorporating a leave-in conditioner into your routine. The Moroccanoil All-in-One Leave-in Conditioner is what I would recommend to anyone who is new to leave-in conditioners and wants to try it out for the first time. The price point of $34 does seem high to me, and if you google "Leave-in conditioner" you'll find a range of prices from $10-$50, so you're definitely not getting the most affordable product in the category. That being said, I really do recommend this one if you have the money to spend on it as I have found it to be very effective in hydrating hair, but please don't feel that this is an absolute must-have since the product still has a small chance of not doing too much for you as this has happened to other reviewers.
