Haircut & Style- Undercut Mullet

Undercut Mullet

This edgy and modern haircut is a variation of the taper mullet that I've explored before, but designed for someone who wants to be a bit more expressive with their style.

What to ask for:

Short Answer

"Textured crop mullet, #1 high taper on sides with disconnection."

Long Answer

I explained previously that for the modern mullet, the focal points of the haircut are the short sides that are tapered into longer lengths, while the overall haircut is still well-balanced. The undercut mullet is no different and I would still put this more in the modern mullet category, just as an edgy variation! With that in mind, there are a few key things to consider for achieving this style. The hair should be worn forward or at least messy, as anything directed backward will have more of a classic vibe to it which may take away from the undercut aspect. If you want to wear it back, you're better off going for the classic taper version where everything is blended into each other. The length on top needs to be long enough to showcase the disconnected sides, I'd say at least 2 inches, but you don't want it too long to the point of completely overhanging the disconnection and covering it up. Whatever length you and your stylist decide upon for the top should then be matched in the back area of the head. It doesn't have to be exactly the same, but there shouldn't be a drastic difference in lengths from front to back.

For the sides, you want something short enough to create contrast but notice how there is still a bit of fading/blending into the rest of the hair. This isn't an extremely harsh disconnection! In the image, you can see that the sides are shaved to just behind the ear, and it is blended into the rest of the back from that point. The main disconnection is between the top and the sides, but there is still a bit of fading in that temple area as it works its way up. It is up to you how short you want to go with for the sides, and you'll want to communicate with your stylist how high and tight you are thinking. The higher you go, the stronger the contrast. For anyone with really thick hair, this may be an ideal look as you are reducing a ton of bulk and poof on the sides, which allows the top hair to lay down nicer and flatter your head shape better.

Another positive to this haircut that you don't quite get from the classic version is that this works for straight hair and curly hair! With the classic version, the hair needs to be manipulated backward and smoothed out for that polished side-part look, but with this haircut, the lengths are meant to be short and messy, so you can work with your natural growth and hair type more easily.

How to Style

The main goal of this style is texture. With any disconnection, the overhanging sides will always appear to have some weight to a degree and can look like a bowl cut. If your goal is a bowl cut then you probably don't have to do much! But if that's not the look, then you'll want to style the hair in a way to express the texture and break up the weight. Depending on your hair texture, you can go about this in different ways.

For straight-to-wavy hair, you'll want to apply a texture spray and scrunch the hair. Folks with straighter hair will want to use a blow dryer so that they can set a global direction going forward, for the top, while scrunching to add local texture. If you have wavier hair, you may find that just applying the texture spray and letting things air dry is enough for you to achieve the look.

For wavy-to-curly hair, you may want to opt for a curl cream instead of a texture spray as your hair may be more prone to frizzing (and texture sprays, especially salt-based products can dry the hair out more). Apply a small amount to saturate the hair and then focus more on setting global direction, which should be mostly forward for the top of the hair. Let air dry, and if the hair is feeling too stiff, feel free to scrunch the hair lightly to break up the product for a more natural finish.
