Long Review

My Experience

As I have come to meet many clients with wavy to curly hair, the question that is asked most often is, "What product should I be using for curly hair?" Now if you have been a long-term client of mine, you may have been told to try out the TIGI Copyright Firm Hold Curl Cream (that I wrote about here). However, that product seems to be harder and harder to find these days and if I am having trouble finding a product, then I am certain my clients won't have a better chance at it either. That's what inspired me to look and see what I could find and recommend as a suitable alternative and the VERB Curl Cream has become my top choice to tame frizz and define waves and curls.

Positives

I had looked at the reviews for this on Sephora and a few things stood out. This product didn't feel too heavy in the hair and it has a very clean, subtle scent to it. With over 400 reviews at 3.8 out of 5 stars, I thought it was worth trying out and seeing if I liked it.

After trying it out on a few of my clients and seeing how it felt in their hair, I felt really positive about it! The product provides just enough hold and hydration to keep frizz down and allows for defined curls. I like how it does not have a strong smell to it, just something clean like any other hair product. So if you're someone who has a signature scent or two, this product won't cause any conflicts. The packaging is also quite nice and simple with the overall presentation being gender-neutral, consistent with VERB's overall aesthetic.

Another key point to this product, as well as all the other VERB products, is that it is priced the same at $22 CAD (as of the time of writing this post) regardless of retailer (except for Amazon which has decided to double the price? Don't go there.) Finally, I took an interest in this product because it is something you can buy at Sephora and not any specific and inaccessible shop. I want my clients to be able to access quality products without having to jump through hoops to get them (one of the negatives of the TIGI Firm Hold Curl Cream that I mentioned earlier).

I can confidently suggest this to my clients who may have no idea where to start with curl products and have only ever heard of hairstyling waxes and pomades. I have yet to check out the rest of the curl hair product line from Verb, but this is definitely a strong offering.

Negatives

I personally like the product and the result it provides. I have received feedback from clients, who have purchased it on their own afterwards, that they really like the product and that it works great for the most part. There have been notes of a lack of hold that the product provides throughout the day, and one of my clients will add a paste into their hair as well to get a stronger hold for their style.

Now, when looking at the 1 and 2-star reviews on Sephora (38 and 36 reviews respectively out of 420, at the time of writing this post) of this product, some individuals found that the product just weighed their hair down, or felt sticky afterward. Some even shared that this product was drying and just tangled their hair! A fraction of these reviews described their hair as a fine texture, meaning that the individual strands are skinnier than average and others stated they had thick hair and it still wasn't doing a good job.

A common point that is brought up is that the product is sticky and leaves a residue. I have noticed that the product may leave a bit of a residue when first applying the product and may require a little more emulsification into the hair. But I definitely notice a good amount of residue on my hands and will always need to wash it off after using it. In terms of what it looks like in the hair after drying/ styling, the results look natural and do not have the appearance of a product in them.

How would I use this product?

I suggest following my guide for wet-setting hair for any curl cream product. Keep in mind that you do not need a lot of this product and you want to take some time with properly emulsifying it into your hair. Leftover residue in your hands will be normal.

Summary

I recommend this product for its light scent, and how it doesn't weigh the hair down while creating defined curls and waves. It is accessible for anyone to purchase at Sephora or Amazon and it is currently priced at $22, which I think is very worth it compared to similar products that are at a higher price point. This is without a doubt the number one product I recommend most for anyone who suffers from dry, frizzy hair and needs a boost of hydration.

This product may not be for you if you have fine-textured hair or hair that is curlier than 3a. Also, keep in mind that this product may stick to your hands and there can be a residue (which isn't the best feeling in your hair or on your hands).
