My Long Review

My Experience

There have been 2 main occasions when I absolutely loved having the Texture Clay in my personal arsenal of hair products.

First, when I had cut my hair very short, I found no other product was able to come anywhere close to the Texture Clay as it was able to give my hair an actual style!

With straight, coarse hair, any length that is cut quite short will only stick out like a porcupine. So the fact that the Texture Clay held things in place and gave my hair some structure was really impressive to me.

The second time was when I had only brought the Texture Clay with me as I was doing a bit of traveling. I didn't have a pre-styler or heat protectant with me and only applied a little bit of clay to my damp hair before blow-drying.

I didn't have many expectations, but my hair was styled perfectly that day. Just enough hold, great texture and my hair didn't feel like it had been dried out at all.

The natural, moisturizing ingredients of the Texture Clay made my hair feel soft and healthy without the need for any other styling product. I didn't realize it was able to do that!

To be honest, I tend to stick with creams and pastes when it comes to styling my hair. I like softer products and I do prefer a touch of shine to add a bit of dimension to my black hair.

I find clay's can be quite thick, making them hard to spread evenly in my palms before applying to the hair. The matte finish and high hold are welcome, but I also find that they can give my hair the appearance of being too dry as a result.

However, I had heard nothing but good things about the MoroccanOil Texture Clay and have wanted to try it for myself for a long time. When I finally got my hands on it, I wasn't completely sold on it.

It definitely isn't my go-to everyday product for a couple of reasons that I'll go over, but when I'm using it for the right situations I am always pleasantly surprised by it!

Positives:

What really makes this product one that I always go back to is that it offers a great hold from just a tiny amount.

It is very easy to scoop out of the jar and spread within my hands. Not as easy as softer products like hair creams and pastes, but definitely easier than other hair clays that I've tried before.

When applied to the hair, the signature MoroccanOil scent comes to life but not in any harsh way. I find the scent is strong enough to notice but not overpowering, which is one of the issues I found with the All-in-One Leave-in Conditioner from the same brand. You won't have any of those issues with this clay!

After a long day, the clay still maintains a decent hold after several hours and rinses out of the hair easily with just water and there is no noticeable residue left over. As a daily styling product, it hits all the boxes of being easy to use, long-lasting, and easy to wash out.

I also mentioned earlier that the Texture Clay has naturally moisturizing ingredients that helped keep my hair soft without the need for additional products.

These ingredients include: aloe vera[1], argan oil[2], shea butter[3], and hydrolyzed soy protein[4]. All of these ingredients help to enhance the health of your hair and having them included in a product that stays in the hair all day only helps increase their effectiveness.

Among the 5-star reviews of the product on Amazon (1798 ratings and 221 written), the common benefits that others have experienced are that this product is perfect for fine hair, as it provides a firm hold that doesn't weigh down the hair.

The texture you can get from this product is one of the main highlights as many agree they get a superb, long-lasting finish that remains soft to the touch.

Negatives:

As mentioned earlier, the thing that I don't quite love about this product is that it can be heavy in the hair, which is quite interesting as those with fine/thin hair seem to feel the opposite and that the product allows them to achieve great volume.

However, with my coarse, straight hair the product can be hit or miss and can end up weighing my hair down.

Another issue I have found for myself is that despite the product being matte, I find that there is a bit of greasiness that comes up after a couple of hours of having it in my hair. Again, this isn't always the case and it feels a bit hard to predict whether my hair will have a natural finish or a little more shine than intended.

I also found the opposite would happen where some days the product would give my hair too much of a dry look, where the hairs would be separated too much and look almost straw-like. I still don’t really understand what causes the product to react differently from one style to the next!

Some of the 1 & 2-star reviews (37 and 25 written reviews, respectively) stated they had similar issues where the product felt too greasy and heavy in the hair. Some shared that the product was too drying, too stiff, and too thick to the point of being hard to spread throughout their hands or even wash out! While others even experienced the product provided virtually no hold for them at all.

So it feels like depending on the day, you may get a different effect from the product and it can be very inconsistent. This is the main reason why I find it hard for me personally to use this as an everyday product despite how great it can be!

How to use:

Though this product is supposed to be used on damp or dry hair, I would really recommend that you primarily apply this to damp hair and blow dry it from there.

The reason for this is that clays tend to be thick and sticky, and when applied to dry hair can really tug a lot at the hair and can be hard to evenly distribute if you don't fully emulsify it into your hands. With damp hair, the application is effortless and you still get all the benefits of the hold from blow drying after.

I found that this product can be used with or without a pre-styling spray and can be styled with a blow dryer, either a concentrator or a diffuser, or just left to air dry.

There is a lot of versatility with this product and you can play around with it to find the best method for yourself.

Summary:

The MoroccanOil is a much-beloved product among many folks out there for its excellent hold, texture, smooth consistency, and washability. I am quite a fan of it myself and love it for its versatility!

However, it seems to be hit or miss with how well it can work as a daily styler and some results may vary depending on how you style with it. When it is working well, I feel like I don't need any other product. But when it isn't working, it leaves my hair feeling a bit heavy and greasy for the day.

Among other reviews though, the hair product seems to do wonders for individuals with fine/thin hair and I just might not be the target audience for this product with my straight/ coarse hair type. So if your hair is a bit on the fine side, this could be the best clay you could ever have!
