I Love Short Hair for the Winter. Here's Why!

Roughly 1 month after I cut my hair super short and left about an inch on top.

For most people, colder weather becomes the perfect reason to grow their hair a bit longer.

More hair means more warmth on your head to brave the winter. It doesn't become as hot and sweaty as it does in the summer.

With more holiday occasions, we also want to have more classic hairstyles with a bit more flow as they can look perfect for those family photos!

Although these are great reasons to go longer, I find I gravitate towards going super short with my hair as the snow gets heavier and heavier.

There are 3 main reasons why I much prefer short hair in the winter and you may consider doing the same!

1- Save Time

With the short crew cut style that I have in the winter, I find that I don't have to spend time on blow drying my hair in the mornings and making sure things are perfectly in place.

I can shower, throw some product in, and go.

I find my morning commutes are extended in the winter time, with the extra tasks of shovelling the snow, warming up my car, and driving more carefully on the icy roads.

It can easily add 15-20 minutes just to get to work, and I need to take that time from somewhere else.

Simplifying my hairstyling routine helps keep me from feeling rushed in the morning.

Also, taking a break from the heat gives my hair a chance to rest and recover from heat damage. This can be a nice little boost for my hair and scalp health as I mentioned in my post last week.

2- No Hat Hair

With the sub-zero temperatures, a toque is a must even for a guy like me who hates wearing hats.

With short hair, I don't need to fuss about hat hair when I get to work and there isn't much that needs to be fixed. I can always look and feel ready to go with as little hassle as possible.

Additionally, I find that the extra warmth of longer hair along with a toque can be a bit too warm, leaving me with a bit of a sweaty head.

I get just the right amount of warmth when I go shorter.

3- Product Shift

It's a given that I use less product with shorter hair. Less shampoo, conditioner, and styling products.

Instead, I can focus more on products that are better for my hair and scalp like hair oils. Having short hair also means I'll have an easier time of massaging oils thoroughly into my scalp.

As I mentioned before, taking a break from the heat of the blow dryer lets my hair recover especially during a time when the air is already so drying.

It is a nice little reset that will also set me up for a strong start when I decide to grow my hair a bit longer again as we get closer to spring.

Summary

If you’ve ever thought about going for a buzzcut or something really short, then I would recommend giving it a try during the winter months!

You’ll be able to save time in your busy schedule while still looking clean and fresh. As well, you can take some time to focus on hair and scalp health and ensure that your hair stays healthy for the next year to come!
