Haircut & Style- Ryan Gosling Inspired Side-Part

If you’re trying to get away from tight fades and short clippered cuts, then you may want to consider going with a classic scissor-cut that is just as easy to style. The Ryan Gosling-inspired side part is also a great transition cut for those who want to start experimenting with longer hair!

What to Ask For

Simple Answer

“Tight scissor cut that is clean around the ears. Fringe is no longer than eyebrow level.”

Long Answer

Unlike haircuts with clippered sides where the top can be left drastically longer, this haircut works best if the top is cut to be balanced with the sides. This means it remains somewhat uniform, with a little more length at the very front. You don’t want something too long that can feel unruly, or something too short that can’t be styled.

This haircut has no disconnections, so instead of trying to find the same part line every time you need to style the hair, you can create a part anywhere on the head. The best parting for this kind of hair tends to be the natural part, where the hair splits on its own with very little effort (usually a little off-center, like in the picture).

The ideal hair type for this look is straight hair with normal-to-fine strands. The hair needs to be soft enough to move around on the top while laying down flat on the sides.

A similar style can be done on wavy hair, which I will showcase next week. But you won’t get the exact same look unless your hair is straight, and it must be adapted to fit your hair type.

This is a great look for anyone who isn’t a fan of super tight clippered haircuts and would rather have a little more fullness on their sides. Additionally, those who would like to grow out their hair longer but need to tidy things up can ask for this haircut to help maintain length while keeping things clean.

If you’ve seen images of Ryan Gosling when he is rocking similar lengths, he actually has a variety of ways to wear the hair. It can be sleek and professional like the picture above, or it can be messed up and left more casual (such as when he played Ken in The Barbie Movie). The style is very versatile for anyone who prefers to switch up their hairstyle every now and then!

How to Style

1- Dampen hair and apply a pre-styling product (salt spray for messy textured look, or tonic for sleek, classy look)

2- Find desired parting while hair is damp.

3- Blow-dry hair to follow parting pattern.

4- When hair is nearly dried, focus on finished texture. (Scrunch with hands for texture or use a brush for a smooth finish.)

5- Apply a medium-to-high holding product with a medium-to-low shine. (Medium shine pairs well with the classy style, but works best for darker hair. Lighter browns and blondes should use a matte product so that the hair does not appear greasy when done.)
